Not all Kona coffee is the same. Kona coffee has different coffee “levels” (grades). Pooki’s Mahi coffee manufacturer sources and roasts the top grades of Kona coffee including the rare Peaberry Kona for the 100% Kona coffee single serve pods product lines. No blends. High quality beans.
All of Pooki’s Mahi’s Kona coffees are inspected by Hawaii’s Department of Agriculture and certified for its origin. We’ve consolidated our sourcing, harvesting and roasting 100% Kona coffee under our Hawaiian coffee manufacturer headquartered in Hawaii.
The definition of “pure Kona coffee” is subjective and is misinterpreted. Pooki’s Mahi takes a very scientific approach to the “pure Kona coffee” definition using product labeling laws for Kona coffee dictated by Hawaii’s Department of Agriculture. Pooki’s Mahi's 100% Kona coffee single serve pods, peaberry Kona coffee single serves and 100% Kona Estate Extra Fancy coffee pods will serve as examples to illustrate Pooki’s Mahi’s stance on non-scientific definitions.
“Pure Kona Coffee” as a label does not exist and it isn’t approved by the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture. “Pure Kona Coffee” is used loosely in conversations.
High level background on picking Kona Coffee Beans
Kona coffee is grown in the Kona coffee belt at 2500 feet on the side of Mauna Loa, Hawaii. It is the world’s largest active volcano. The Kona coffee belt is often referred to as “Kona District” and has been growing coffee for about 180+ years.
Growing and harvesting Kona coffee beans are treated similarly to growing wine in Napa Valley. The Hualalai mountainside impacts Kona coffee’s quality. Factors include but not limited to elevation, volcanic soil, water, pruning, fertilizing and cultivation. There are two options to picking Kona coffee beans.
Option one is to use machine to auto-pick the berries. Coffee berries picked by machines are not consistent because the machinery will do a “blanket pick” on all coffee beans. Machinery won’t know the difference between “red ripe coffee cherries” or. “coffee cherries.” This is a fast method that has the share of quality issues.
Option two is to hire farmers to hand pick the coffee berries. This is a more expensive route. Kona coffee farmers pay the coffee cherry pickers by the hour to pick only red ripe coffee. Kona coffee cherries are sorted to ensure quality Kona coffee beans will be roasted.
Kona coffee beans are harvested from February through January. From August through January Kona coffee trees are hand picked several times. Each coffee tree provides approximately 15-20 pounds of coffee cherry resulting in two (2) lbs of coffee.
There are over 500+ Kona coffee farmers that grow Kona coffee beans. Not all farmers are roasters.
Customer should be careful of buying “cheap” Kona coffee single serve pods. Customers need to pay attention to the total percentage of Kona coffee beans used in the single serve.
Coffee beans harvested from Kona, roasted and packaged into the final retail selling unit are 100% Kona coffee certified. The final roasted batch is no longer considered 100% Kona coffee if any portion of Kona coffee beans are mixed with coffee beans from another region (like South America, Central America, Africa). The end product is a 10% Kona Coffee Blend and not 100% Kona coffee. The 10% indicates the total percentage of Kona coffee beans used in the retail selling unit.
Examples:
10% Kona blends means the high quality 10% Kona beans are usually mixed with lower grade beans from Brazil, Central America, Africa and Indonesia.
Pooki’s Mahi’s Policy on Kona Blends:
If Pooki’s Mahi uses 10% Kona coffee blends, we list the harvesting source of the remaining 90% according to the product labelling laws. Per Hawaii’s Department of Agriculture manufactures are only required to list the total % of Kona beans used. At Pooki’s Mahi we don’t believe this is enough. We took a standard high tech approach by listing the full BOM (Bill of Materials) for the end product.
The percentage of Kona coffee used must be prominently displayed. Examples: “100% Kona Coffee” or “10% Kona Coffee.” The following terminology isnot considered authentic Kona coffee:
