Pooki's Mahi's Definition:  Coffee Pods vs. Single Serve Pods

Cups for the Keurig brewing system are single serve coffee cups that brew one cup of coffee or any hot beverage is also known as single serves or single serves cups.  Keurig is a machine that brews single serve cups.  Customers have different definitions of “Single Serves” or "Single Serve Cups" depending on the use:

1. Coffee pods - Prepackaged ground coffee in a very thin paper filter.  This form is usually used in hotels and timeshares.  The coffee is usually “fine ground” like an espresso grind.  Examples of brand producing coffee pods include Senseo, Espresso and ESE. As of 2016 "pods" is also used to describe single serve cups.
2. Coffee capsule - Plastic cups that work in a specific system.  This form is usually sold online, in hotels and some times in grocery stores.  The coffee capsule will not work in other single serve brewing system.  Examples of brands producing coffee capsules working in their worn proprietary system include Nespresso, Starbucks Vue, Lavazza, Dolce Gusto, Illy, Tassimo T-Discs, etc.
3. Sticks or Coffee bags - Freeze dried instant coffee.  The custom pours the freeze dried coffee into a cup of boiling water.  Folgers is the major coffee manufacture producing this form.

Pooki's Mahi is a single serve coffee maker using "Cups," "Pods," "Sustainable Pods" and "Single Serve Cups" to describe the 100% Kona coffee cups. Cups Material, Environmental Impact, Compostability

Nespresso first sold coffee pods in 1986.  It was not recyclable.  According to BBC News single serve cups or coffee pods make up ⅓ of the Western European retail coffee market.  Some coffee pods or single serve cups havesix grams of coffee andthree grams of packaging.

Cups were originally available in #7, #5 cups with a foil lid.  Single serve cups made from #7 plastic are not recyclable.  #5 plastic claims to be recyclable; however environmental experts do not consider any plastic (in general) product as recyclable.  Some single serve cups made overseas (outside US) are lower in quality and will crack during the shipping process.  The sides of very low quality cups will melt. Customers are not able to smell the coffee through the plastic cup pod.

Cup lids are usually made from foil.  Foil is not compostable and unknown if it is recyclable.  Foil lids from overseas (outside US) might not be lead-free.  The foil does not allow the customer to see the coffee grind before brewing.

Several petitions (like http://killthekcup.org) and countries are banning plastic cups because it is not recyclable.  In Hamburg, Germany the government banned coffee black / white cups on February 22, 2016.

As of 2008, international company Ethical Coffee Company was the first to develop a 100% biodegradable coffee capsule.  

Environmentally Friendly Coffee Pods / Single Serve Cups

Cup manufactures have produced more environmentally friendly cups that is made out of mesh and very little #5 plastic cup.  Rogers Family of Lincoln, California was the first company to create a 97% mesh cup covered in a plastic imprinted lid.  Other US manufacturers like Treehouse and Canadian producer Mothers Parkers & Tea have also produced environmentally friendly cups.

The total number of coffee pods single serve cups per pound of coffee is largely dependent on on how many grams per cup and the type of coffee grind used for the coffee bean. Single Serve cup manufacturers will quote30 cups per 1 pound of coffee beans.  This means each cup contains .53 oz. of coffee beans.  

• 16 oz. per 1 lb
• 30 cups
• 16 oz. / 30 cups = .53 oz.

The number of cups in per pound of coffee is an estimate because some machines will add or subtract from the functional spec.  For example, a functional spec that requires 11 grams of drip grind coffee might have +/- 2% more.
