The amount of caffeine in Pooki’s Mahi’s Kona coffee cups is dependent on the Kona coffee. The USDA National Nutrient Database lists an espresso cup of 25 ml contains 23 mg and an 8-ounce cup (237 ml) contains 95 mg of caffeine.
The darker the roast like Pooki’s Mahi’s 100 Kona coffee French Roast cups will contain less caffeine in the pods. Pooki’s Mahi’s French Roast Kona coffee pods are made from dark brown, shiny with oil, almost burnt Kona coffee beans. The natural Kona coffee flavors and aroma have been burnt off along with caffeine. Lighter Kona coffee roasts contain more caffeine in the single serve cups. Pooki’s Mahi’s 100 percent Kona coffee cups are made from medium roast Kona coffee beans. The Kona coffee beans are medium brown and good for tasting the natural flavors. Medium roast is also known as City Roast. Kona coffee is made from Arabica coffee plants. In general arabica coffee plants contains half the caffeine in the Robusta coffee plants.
There are three methods to remove caffeine from Kona coffee beans: methylene cholride, thyl acetate or the Swiss water decaffeination method. The Swiss water decaffeination process is different; it does not directly or indirectly add chemicals to extract the caffeine. It uses solubility and osmosis to decaffeinate the Kona coffee beans by soaking the green Kona coffee beans in very hot water to dissolve the caffeine. The process is repeated until all the caffeine is removed from the Kona coffee beans. Multiple tests are conducted to ensure caffeine no longer exists in the Kona coffee beans. Green coffee extract is a residual result from using the water Kona coffee beans were used to extra caffeine.
After the Kona coffee beans has been decaffeinated, Pooki’s Mahi’s Hawaiian coffee manufactures retests the Kona coffee beans. Manufacturing checks that the Kona coffee bean is 97% or more caffeine free per the US standards and guidelines.
