Hawaii is the only state in the US that grows, cultivate and sell coffee plants, coffee green beans and coffee commercially. Arabica coffee are planted almost exclusively in Hawaii. There are several Arabica coffee types: Typica, Yellow Catuai, Red Catuai, Blue Mountain, Blue Mountain, and Mundo Novo. On the Big Island the Coffee Arabica (coffee plant) is cultivated on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa in the Kona Districts. Kona coffee is one of the most expensive coffees in the world. Coffee is commercially grown on several islands: Big Island, Kauai, Maui, and Molokai. Many customers are most familiar with Kona coffee which is grown on the Big Island, Hawaii. Customers have started to taste other Hawaiian coffees because they are receiving recognition like coffees from Kau, Big Island (called Kau coffee) and Maui (named Maui Mokka coffee).
Most of the coffee farms were sugar cane plantations converted into coffee farm when the sugar industry collapsed.
Coffees from the Big Island, Hawaii
The Big Island is home to several Hawaiian coffee areas: Kona, Kau, Puna and Hamakua.
Kona, Big Island
Kona coffee is grown on many smaller independent Kona coffee farms that formed a close knit community. There are over 600+ farms growing, harvesting and cultivating the coffee plant variety Kona Typica. Most farms are family owned and manage up to five acres of Kona coffee. Kona coffee is priced higher and one of the most expensive coffees rivaling Latin America’s Geisha coffees or Jamaica’s Blue Mountain coffees.
Festivals:
Kona hosts a popular coffee festival, Kona Coffee Festival, in November. Visithttp://konacoffeefest.com to learn more.
We’re dedicating a separate article on Kona coffee to capture regional information, awards won and our strict approach on why we’ve consolidated sourcing and harvesting Kona coffee beans through our Hawaii coffee manufacturing partner.
In 2012-2013 our CEO/Founder originally collaborated with several Kona coffee farmers and learned the pricing given to us was “out of bounds” and not in line to other Hawaiian coffee farmers. For example, $22 per 8 oz. of coffee does not drive to a net positive P&L (Profit & Loss) template. This is not the true wholesale price. We were paying full retail price. The first collaboration was a Pooki’s Mahi’s 100% Kona coffee whole bean. We also learned the quality of Kona coffee varied greatly between the various farms.
Pooki’s Mahi’s repeat customers expect consistency in our supply chain from the quality of Hawaiian coffee, merchandising and stabilized pricing. We’ve consolidated sourcing, harvesting and roasting under one Hawaiian coffee roasters headquartered in Hawaii in 2014. This resulted in a significant increase in company growth from repeat customers.
Pooki’s Mahi’s uses 100% Kona coffee from one farm that earned a Forbes Top 50 award listing. Pooki’s Mahi’s coffee manufacture roasts the largest amount of Kona coffee beans in the world. The keen eye for quality and consistent execution are one of the many reasons Pooki’s Mahi consolidated coffee manufacturing operations under one parter. The final packout, cup and FAI inspections occur in mainland USA in a BRC certified manufacturing facility.
Kau, Big Island
Kau coffees from Kau, Big Island came from former Kau sugar plantations. Kau coffee beans used to be sold directly into the same Kona coffee market because Kau coffee did not have a brand and Kau coffee was relatively unknown. The Kau coffee region started to gain traction when several Kau farmers won several awards at Special Coffee Association of America’s annual cupping competition. Kau is home to approximately 500 acres of Kau coffee.
Kau coffee farmers used to travel to the Kona region to have their Kau coffee beans roasted. Recently the Kau Coffee Mill launched so Kau coffee farmers have a roasting facility closer to them.
Customers who like Kau coffee in whole bean form can purchase Kau coffee at Starbucks under Starbuck’s Reserve program. Kau coffee is in limited supply.
Festivals:
Kau hosts a coffee festival similar to Kona Coffee Festival. Visithttp://www.kaucoffeefestival.com to learn more.
Awards Won by Kau coffee farmers:
In 2012-2013 our CEO/Founder originally collaborated with a few Kau coffee farmers and learned the pricing given to us was “out of bounds” and not in line to other Hawaiian coffee farmers. For example, $20 per 4 oz. of coffee does not drive to a net positive P&L (Profit & Loss) template. The first collaboration was a Pooki’s Mahi’s 100% Kau coffee whole bean. We also learned a 150 acre farm that may have produced award-winning coffee beans may not produce the same high quality in subsequent years.
Pooki’s Mahi’s repeat customers expect consistency in the supply chain from the quality of Hawaiian coffee, merchandising and stabilized pricing. We’ve consolidated sourcing, harvesting and roasting under one Hawaiian coffee roasters headquartered in Hawaii in 2014. This resulted in a significant increase in company growth from repeat customers.
Pooki’s Mahi’s 100% Kau coffee pods are a limited edition. The Kau coffee used is harvested from Kau, Big Island sourced from several farmers and roasted in Oahu, Hawaii. The final packout, cup and FAI inspections occur in mainland USA in a BRC certified manufacturing facility.
Puna, Big Island
Puna is located in the northeast region of the Big Island. It is the wettest region of the Big Island. The average rainfall is 150” to 220.” The Puna coffee region grows coffee on over 100 acres. In 2013 Puna coffee earned 1st place in Hawaii Coffee Association statewide cupping competition.
Pooki’s Mahi has not used Puna coffee in any of the Hawaiian coffee pods.
Hamakua, Big Island
Hamakua is located in the northwest region of the Big Island and home to the famous Hamakua Macadamia nuts. The Hamakua region used to grow coffee until the sugar cane industry almost took it over. Sugar plantations ceased to exist in the mid-1990s and many of the sugar cane plantations converted to growing coffee.
Pooki’s Mahi has not used Hamakua coffee in any of the Hawaiian coffee pods.
Coffees from Kauai
Kauai is one of the islands in the Hawaiian Island chain. Kauai produces over half of Hawaiian coffee production. No more than 5 coffee farms between five acres to 3000 acres each grow Kauai coffee. 2-3 farms largely control growing Kauai coffee. The largest USA coffee farm is in Kauai and is a subsidiary of a European conglomerate. It processes approximately 3 million pounds of green bean per year. Kauai coffee farmers grow all types of Arabica coffee (plant): Blue Mountain, Mundo Novo, Red Catuai, Typica, and Yellow Catuai
Pooki’s Mahi has not used Kauai coffee in any of the Hawaiian coffee pods.
Maui
Maui is one of the islands in the Hawaiian Island chain. More than 50 coffee farmers grow Maui coffee farmers on 600 acres growing Maui coffee in large and small productions. Maui Coffee consistently scored well in Hawaii’s Coffee Association’s annual coffee cupping competition. Several coffee varietals are grown on Maui on slopes of Haleakala and West Maui Mountains regions: Bourbon, Catuai, Caturra, Mokka and Typica. The largest Maui coffee grower is Maui Grown Coffee. Maui Grown Coffee harvests Maui Mokka, Yellow Caturra, Red Catuai and Guatemalan Typica.
In 2012-2013 our CEO/Founder originally collaborated with a few Maui coffee farmers through another budding Kau coffee partnership and learned the pricing given to us was “out of bounds” and not in line to other Hawaiian coffee farmers. For example, $18 per 8 oz. of coffee does not drive to a net positive P&L (Profit & Loss) template. The first collaboration was a Pooki’s Mahi’s 100% Maui Mokka coffee whole bean. We also learned a 5 acre farm that may have produced award-winning coffee beans may not produce the same high quality in subsequent years.
Pooki’s Mahi’s 100% Maui Mokka coffee pods are very popular with brand advocates like celebrities, athletes and bigger retailers. The Maui Mokka coffee used is harvested from Kanaapali, Maui sourced from one farm and roasted in Oahu, Hawaii. The final packout, pod and FAI inspections occur in mainland USA in a BRC certified manufacturing facility.
Molokai
The small island of Molokai has approximately 8000 residents with one plantation the size of 150 acres harvesting Molokai coffee. The mill is located in Kualapu’u, a small town on the island. Molokai grows Red Catuai. Approximately 20 acres are used to grow organic Molokai coffee.
Pooki’s Mahi has not used Molokai coffee in any of the Hawaiian coffee pods.
