Guide to Pooki’s Mahi’s Custom Kona Coffee Decaf Single Serve Pods

Pooki’s Mahi’s guide incorporates our expertise in technology, supply chain management, m/ecommerce systems and data from our analytics.  We’ve also included some insight to our patented go-to-market launch process and new product introduction framework.  Not all customers can afford the total customer acquisition cost to sell their own branded custom promotional products in retail channels.

1. Freshness (product label)
2. Decaf product label (mislabeled product information)
3. Missing decaf process (mislabeled product information)
4. Missing amount of Kona coffee beans (product label)

Note: Multiple research was conducted throughout 2014-2016 because some of the Kona coffee manufactures participated in cyber-harassment, cyber-bullying and character assassination of Pooki’s Mahi’s brand and executives.  The data presented below is as of 15-August-2016.  Pooki’s Mahi will continue to monitor the brands.

A quick search on Amazon USA yields two companies producing 100% Kona coffee decaffeinated cups:

1. Aloha Island Coffee, 12 cups, $30.00 or $60.00 (for 24 count) - does not include shipping
2. Pooki’s Mahi, 24 count $54.99 (on Amazon) or $47.99 with free shipping

A search on “Kona coffee decaf cups” including 10% Kona coffee blends on Amazon resulted in the following coffee manufactures:

1. Caza Trail Coffee, Kona Blend $11.82
2. Martinson Coffee, Kona Blend, $14.58
3. Victor Allen Coffee Variety Pack, $44.99

Pooki’s Mahi completed an FAI on all the Kona coffee decaf single serve cups for Aloha Island Coffee, Caza Trail Coffee, Martinson Coffee, and Victor Allen Coffee.  Below is a summary of the findings:

Issue #1:  Freshness

None of the Kona coffee decaffeinated single serves were individually wrapped. The exception is Pooki’s Mahi.  It’s is unclear how fresh each single serve cup is considering that an expiration date and/or LOT number was missing on each of the Kona coffee decaf single serve.  Kona coffee pods manufactured in a black or white cup do not have expiration or LOT date codes because the cup manufacturers are unable to imprint the actual cup.  The first generation of Kona coffee single serve manufacturer(s) produced Kona coffee decaffeinated cups in white cups.  Expiration dates were captured in fine print on the outside packaging.  Pooki’s Mahi’s FAI team could not find the LOT date code on the outside packaging.  

Customers might receive repackaged Kona coffee decaf cups that might have expired. This is a dangerous practice for companies selling variety pack pods under a “Make Your Own Cup Variety Cup campaign.” Kona coffee single serves in a variety pack might have different expiration dates.  Often times the earliest expiration date is listed on the outside packaging.

Issue #2:  Mislabeled Production Information - Missing “Decaf”

None of the Kona coffee decaf cup blends were “Kona coffeedecaf cups.”  All coffee pod single serve cup manufactures allegedly selling Kona coffee decaf cups with “blends” listed did not sell “Kona coffee decaffeinated cups;”  all Kona coffee blend roasters were selling “regular or caffeinated” Kona coffee single serve pods.

Customers who are very sensitive to caffeine will be extremely unhappy for buying an improperly labelled Kona coffee decaf single serve.  Customers have the right to file an official complaint with the marketplace platform (in this case Amazon) and report the company for incorrectly labeling and using false advertisement.

Issue #3:  Mislabeled Product Information - Missing Decaf Process

Aloha Islands and all Kona coffee blend brands did not list the specific decaffeination process to decaf the Kona coffee single serve pods on the product page on the marketplace platform or on each of the company website.  There are two methods to decaffeinated Kona coffee:  Swiss Water Decaffeination process or using chemicals.  Customers are smart and will want the specific decaffeination process documented.

Customers conduct their own research on Kona coffee decaf cups before making a purchase.  Pooki’s Mahi’s customers won’t buy Kona coffee decaf cups from brands that does not list the method to decaffeinated Kona coffee.  Customers are sensitive to chemicals.  The decaf method should be listed on the product page as part of the product information.  It should not be listed on the title (name) of the product and be missing in the product information section.  

Issue #4: Mislabeled Production Information - Missing Percentage of Kona Coffee

With the exception of Pooki’s Mahi all brands selling 100% Kona coffee decaf cups or Kona coffee decaf cupsblend did not list the total percentage of Kona coffee beans used in the Kona coffee decaf cups.  Customers who are price sensitive may think they purchased 100% Kona coffee decaf cups when they did not.  Customers get what the pay for.  

Per the Department of Agriculture the state of Hawaii requires all coffee roasters and pods single serve cup manufacturers to prominently list the percentage of 100% Kona coffee used. The amount of 100 percent Kona coffee used must be displayed on the outside packaging and on the individual product.  The number must be in large font so customers are not confused and are aware of the purchase.  The price per cup and by box often indicates the quality of the 100% Kona coffee, the total amount of 100 percent Kona coffee beans used and the attention to detail of the entire supply chain.
